Happy Friday! This is Mind Your Business.
Think of a city the way you think of a ship being loaded at port.
Every crane, every container, every decision about what goes where reflects a bet someone made about where things are headed. This week, a lot of bets got placed at once.
Here's what moved this week.

🚁ACQUISITIONS
Draganfly Snaps Up Fixed-Wing Drone Maker

NASDAQ-listed Draganfly closed its acquisition of Tampa-based Skip Dynamix for up to $7.525M, adding low-cost, mass-producible fixed-wing drones to its defense lineup.
Unlike the rotary drones most people picture, fixed-wing models fly like planes: longer range, better fuel efficiency, more ground per mission. The deal moves Draganfly from a single-product maker toward a full drone solutions provider.
⚡Why It Matters: Defense and dual-use drone tech is pulling serious venture and government dollars. Tampa Bay hardware and aerospace founders should watch how small acquisitions like this reshape the field.
🏠STARTUPS / INSURTECH
This Insurer Pays You to Hurricane-Proof Your Home

Dan Preston, cofounder & CEO @ Stand
Tampa-based Stand launched its first voluntary Florida homeowner's policy.
Instead of pricing by zip code, it runs aerospace-grade wind simulations on your specific home. Make targeted upgrades and premiums can drop up to 40% for the life of the policy. Early customers also get:
Free smart leak-detection devices plus the first year of monitoring
Pre-negotiated rates with vetted contractors
Stand already insures $10B+ in property and entered Florida through the Citizens depopulation program.
⚡Why It Matters: Florida's insurance crisis is a real cost for local founders and property owners. A carrier that helps reduce risk instead of just pricing it is worth watching.

✈️STARTUPS / AVIATION
Ex-NFL Star Launches No-Fee Private Aviation Brokerage

Jim Pyne, founder @ PLS Aviation
Jim Pyne (NFL lineman, coach, and Wheels Up co-founder) launched PLS Aviation, a Tampa-based private jet brokerage with a simple pitch: no membership fees, no hidden costs, and someone answering the phone at 2am.
PLS offers on-demand charter, aircraft sourcing, and advisory to executives, athletes, and high-net-worth clients, with global fleet access and transparent pricing. Super Bowl-winning coaches Jon Gruden and Bruce Arians have both vouched for him.
⚡Why It Matters: Tampa Bay continues to attract founder talent with deep sports and entertainment networks, and PLS Aviation is a reminder that some of the most compelling startups here are built on relationships and trust as much as technology.

⚓GENERAL BUSINESS / INDUSTRIAL
Tampa's Biggest Cement Terminal Just Opened for Business

Image credit to Port Tampa Bay
SESCO Cement opened a new import terminal at Port Redwing in Port Tampa Bay, eaturing the largest wheel-mounted ship unloader in operation and nearly 100,000 tons of silo storage.
SESCO says it will be Florida's largest cement terminal when fully built out. The custom unloader alone took two years of engineering and a 25-day ocean voyage to reach Tampa. It connects to markets by sea, interstate, and rail.
⚡Why It Matters: For founders in construction, logistics, or real estate, a bigger local cement supply chain means fewer material bottlenecks and stronger regional infrastructure.
📰 MEDIA
Local paper launches ad agency, raises eyebrows

Image credit to Tampa Bay Times
The Tampa Bay Times launched Launch Point, a full-service marketing agency it says will help fund local journalism. The catch: when a newsroom sells marketing to the same businesses its reporters cover, editorial independence gets harder to see.
No one alleges direct interference, but the structural conflict is real: who gets a flattering profile, which story gets spiked. The Times built its brand on watchdog reporting, so the question is whether the firewall holds.
⚡Why It Matters: Tampa Bay founders are now potential clients of the outlet
that covers them, worth understanding how that could shape local coverage.
🏭MANUFACTURING
East Tampa Bets Big on Manufacturing Jobs

Image credit to Tampa Bay EDC
Manufacturing is now 36% of the Tampa Bay EDC's project pipeline, with leads up 30% since 2020, but only about 12% of manufacturing prospects pick the region (vs. 24% for other industries).
EDC president Craig Richard says the gap is ecosystem: manufacturers want workforce pipelines, training, and incubator space first. The fix is the East Tampa Innovation Center on Columbus Drive, a partnership of the EDC, Opportunity Tampa Bay, and Integral Florida bundling incubation space, workforce training, and business support.
⚡Why It Matters: Founders in manufacturing, construction tech, or workforce development now have a concrete anchor forming in East Tampa, potentially a launchpad for early-stage industrial companies.
